Hyundai Wia-Supernal Sign MOU for UAM Landing System Development
Goal for FAA Airworthiness Certification by 2028
Hyundai Wia is partnering with Supernal, a future aviation mobility (AAM) specialist company under Hyundai Motor Group, to develop an urban air mobility (UAM) landing system.
On the 18th, the company signed a business agreement with Supernal for the 'UAM Landing System Development' at Seoul Airport in Seongnam, Gyeonggi Province. Hyundai Wia will develop and supply the UAM landing system by 2028. The signing ceremony was attended by Shin Jaewon, CEO of Supernal and head of Hyundai Motor and Kia AAM Division, and Jung Jaewook, president of Hyundai Wia.
Hyundai Wia will develop a wheel-type landing system used for both prototype and mass-produced UAMs. The goal is to obtain airworthiness certification from the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration in the second half of 2028. Airworthiness certification is a process that verifies whether an aircraft meets the safety standards suitable for flight.
The company will also develop a landing system equipped with electric braking and control devices suitable for electric vertical takeoff and landing UAMs. For the first time in Korea, a 'health monitoring' system will be applied to this system. This allows real-time monitoring of the system status, significantly reducing maintenance costs.
Hyundai Wia has long developed landing gear for commercial and military aircraft. It manufactures landing gear for the domestically produced supersonic trainer T-50 and the Korean utility helicopter (KUH-1) Surion. Through collaboration with domestic and international academic and research institutes, the company is working on domestic production of materials and securing international civil airworthiness certification technology. Building on this agreement, Hyundai Wia plans to expand into developing landing systems for regional air mobility (RAM).
