"Flood Damage Prevention"... Ulsan City Begins Dredging Dongcheon
Riverbed Maintenance Work on Local Streams Until Year-End
2.4km Section from Sangan Bridge to Sirye Jamsoo Bridge
Ulsan City is undertaking a dredging project on Dongcheon to respond to flood damage.
The section for the ‘Dongcheon Local Stream Bed Maintenance Construction’ is a 2.4 km stretch from Sangangyo Bridge in Buk-gu to Sirye Submersible Bridge.
Ulsan City completed administrative procedures such as a small-scale environmental impact assessment by last September and plans to dredge about 60,000 cubic meters over three months from this month until the end of the year, investing a total project cost of 500 million KRW.
The sand generated from the dredging work will not be treated as landfill soil but sold through bidding to achieve budget savings.
An official from Ulsan City said, “We are carrying out maintenance work to prepare in advance for natural disasters such as typhoons and heavy rains,” adding, “We plan to increase tax revenue by selling the generated sand and also alleviate the shortage of aggregate supply.”
River dredging work involves dredging sand or soil deposited on the riverbed to increase the area through which water flows, thereby reducing natural disasters such as flood damage.
