Lee Jae-myung, leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, evaluated the by-election for the Seoul Gangseo District Mayor on the 11th, in which candidate Jin Gyo-hoon’s victory became certain, as "a great victory for the people and a stern judgment on the failure of state affairs."

View original imageOn the same day, as Jin’s victory became likely by leading the People Power Party candidate Kim Tae-woo by an overwhelming margin, Lee posted on his Facebook titled "I will humbly heed the will of the people" and made this statement.
Lee said, "I do not consider this a victory for the Democratic Party," and summarized the election as "a harsh warning from the people commanding political awakening and the recovery of people’s livelihoods."
He emphasized, "Reflecting once again on the complacency, lack of fierceness, and ongoing shortcomings of the Democratic Party, which was once the ruling party, I reaffirm my commitment to devote all efforts as a public servant of the people to the restoration of livelihoods, economy, safety, peace, and democracy."
He continued, "We will overcome small differences within us to unite, transcend conflicts and divisions to gather the people’s strength as one, overcome the crisis, and pioneer a better future for the nation and its people," adding, "I will do my best to restore true politics that competes solely for the national interest and the welfare of the people."

Lee concluded, "Even amid a grim reality, I will nurture the spark of hope so that the people can prepare for tomorrow with expectations," and said, "With a fearful heart, I offer my respect and gratitude to the great people and the residents of Gangseo District."
