The Republic of Korea Air Force 1st Fighter Wing (hereinafter ‘1st FW’) announced on the 4th that the 206th Fighter Squadron (hereinafter ‘206th SQ’) held a reestablishment ceremony to celebrate its rebirth through the introduction of the TA-50 BLOCK2 and to commend the efforts of the unit preparation team.

Commanders, staff officers, members of the 206th SQ, as well as soldiers and civilian employees of the 1st FW attended to celebrate the reestablishment of the 206th SQ and to encourage those who contributed to the reestablishment.
The 206th SQ was a fighter squadron that primarily operated F-5E/F aircraft until operations ceased in December 2021.
It carried out missions such as training elite fighter pilots, defending airspace during wartime, and providing close support operations in the rear area. It has a history of achieving 90,000 hours of accident-free flight through a solid training curriculum and thorough operational execution.
With the retirement of the F-5E/F aircraft, the 206th SQ naturally proceeded to disbandment and officially ceased operations in December 2021.
However, with the introduction of the TA-50 BLOCK2, developed to establish an efficient and systematic pilot training system, the decision was made to reestablish the 206th SQ. Thanks to the efforts of the unit preparation team and the 1st FW, the rebirth of the 206th SQ was realized.
The 206th SQ plans to sequentially introduce the TA-50 BLOCK2 by 2026, focusing on its operational deployment. Additionally, to ensure stable operational deployment, the process will be divided into three phases: initial, limited, and full. During these phases, tasks such as instructor pilot training, combat training, and operational deployment in emergencies will be carried out.
