Among 180,000 digital sex crime materials reviewed by the government over the past five years, only 509 cases resulted in a 'deletion' measure to block distribution.
According to data submitted by the Korea Communications Standards Commission to Kim Byung-wook, a member of the People Power Party on the National Assembly's Science, Technology, Information and Broadcasting Committee, the commission reviewed 184,722 cases of digital sex crime information from 2019 to the end of August this year.
By year, there were 25,992 cases in 2019, 35,603 in 2020, 26,000 in 2021, 55,287 in 2022, and 41,840 as of the end of August 2023.
By type, 168,290 cases involved illegal recordings such as sexual acts and sexual exploitation, while 16,432 cases involved other sex crimes including sexual false video information (deepfakes, etc.), victim identity disclosure information, and sexual portrait rights information.
However, only 509 cases resulted in a 'deletion' measure following the review of digital sex crime information.
According to the commission's correction request status, access blocking was the most frequent with 183,489 cases, followed by deletion with 509 cases, and service termination with 12 cases.

Assemblyman Kim Byung-wook stated, "Due to the nature of digital sex crimes, if deletion measures are not taken, victims will inevitably live with anxiety that sex crime materials may be distributed," and added, "Since digital sex crime materials are mainly distributed through overseas servers, it is necessary to establish a cooperative system with overseas operators and actively pursue deletion measures."
