Jo Gwang-hui, known as the 'Asia's strongest' in kayak, consecutively won the kayak singles 200m event at the 2014 Incheon and 2018 Jakarta-Palembang Asian Games. Since that event was removed from this competition, he teamed up with Jang Sang-won to compete in the kayak doubles 500m.

Canoeing is broadly divided into sprint and slalom. Sprint takes place on calm water, while slalom is held on courses with rapids exceeding 2 m/s and obstacles such as rocks. Sprint is further divided into kayak and Canadian (canoe) based on the type of boat used. Kayak involves sitting in a covered boat and using a double-bladed paddle, whereas Canadian involves an open boat and a single-bladed paddle.
