[Asian Games] Korean Fencing, No Medal in Men's Foil Individual Event for the First Time in 45 Years
Korean fencing failed to win a medal in the men's foil individual event at the Asian Games for the first time in 45 years.
On the 24th, Lee Kwang-hyun lost 14-15 to Hong Kong's Ryan Choi in the quarterfinals held at the Electronic University Gymnasium in Hangzhou, China.
Lee Kwang-hyun was trailing 2-5 early on but tied the score at 7-7 and then extended the lead to 11-8.
However, he allowed a late comeback, conceding a 13-13 tie, and ultimately lost by a single point.
Lim Cheol-woo, who also participated, was narrowly defeated 14-15 by Taiwan's Chien Yi-tung in the round of 16.
This marks the first time in 45 years since the 1978 Bangkok Games that the men's foil has failed to medal in the individual event at the Asian Games. From the 1986 Seoul Games onward, Korea had won medals in nine consecutive tournaments, earning 2 golds, 6 silvers, and 3 bronzes during that period. At the 2018 Jakarta-Palembang Games, Son Young-gi finished in a joint third place.
