On this day, about 100 stakeholders from industry, academia, research, and government, including Kim Seong-geun, President of POSTECH; Ahn Tae-gyu, Director of the Basic Research Headquarters Natural Sciences Division; Kim Jeong-pyo, Director of Pohang City Digital Convergence Industry Division; Moon Mi-ok, President of the Science and Technology Policy Institute; Kim Hyun-min, Director of the National Institute for Mathematical Sciences; and Park Jong-il, President of the Korean Mathematical Society, attended. The event began with a welcome speech by Kim Seong-geun, President of POSTECH, followed by an introduction of the Mathematical Machine Learning Research Center and a plaque ceremony.

On the 22nd, a conference was held to discuss current issues for research collaboration through the ‘International Conference on Mathematical Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence.’

The POSTECH Mathematical Machine Learning Research Center was selected for the Ministry of Science and ICT’s Leading Research Center support project in June and will receive 10.53 billion KRW in research funding over seven years until 2030 to elucidate AI operating principles and foster advanced talent.

Through research on large-scale physics information-based AI models, geometry-based machine learning, and theoretical properties of geometric optimization problems used in machine learning, the center aims to create a new research field called analytic and geometric machine learning and contribute to overcoming theoretical limitations in AI applications.

The center director leading the research, Hwang Hyun-joo, was recognized for his expertise by receiving the ‘Choi Seok-jung Award of the Year’ last year from the Ministry of Science and ICT and the Korean Mathematical Society for developing a temperature prediction AI solution using mathematics in steel manufacturing processes.

Kim Jeong-pyo, Director of the Digital Convergence Industry Division, said, “Pohang City established the Digital Convergence Industry Division last July and is concentrating all administrative efforts on fostering future core new industries such as AI and quantum computing. To nurture rapidly evolving AI technologies like AlphaGo and ChatGPT as strategic industries and expand their application across various business sectors, it is essential to thoroughly understand and research the fundamental mathematics.”

The Leading Research Center project has been a representative basic research support program steadily promoted by the Ministry of Science and ICT for over 30 years since 1990, and currently, 150 leading research centers are in operation.
