Ahead of International Coastal Cleanup Day for a Clean Marine Environment

Mokpo Maritime Police Station (Chief Kim Hae-cheol) announced on the 22nd that public and private sectors jointly conducted marine debris cleanup activities in island areas in celebration of the 23rd International Coastal Cleanup Day.

International Coastal Cleanup Day is a global marine environmental conservation event held every year on the third Saturday of September, during which marine debris and waste are collected to clean up coastlines.

To commemorate this, about 70 participants from five related organizations including the West Sea Regional Maritime Police Agency, Mokpo Maritime Police, Jindo County (Jodo-myeon), Dadohaehaesang National Park (Western part), Korea Marine Environment Management Corporation (Mokpo), and six companies and groups such as Jodo Power Plant, Dokgeo Power Plant, Jindo Fisheries Cooperative, Dokgeo Fishing Village Association, Honorary Marine Environment Monitors, and volunteers took part in the cleanup activity.

The cleanup site, Dokgeo Island in Jindo County, is a inhabited island designated as part of Dadohaehaesang National Park. Despite continuous concentrated inflow of marine debris, due to its remote location from the mainland, residents find it difficult to collect and remove debris on their own.

On the day, five vessels including Mokpo Maritime Police coastal rescue boats, Jindo County Cheongbang ship, and National Park survey vessels were mobilized to collect a total of 30 tons of marine debris.

A Mokpo Maritime Police official said, “Various marine debris such as abandoned fishing gear and plastic waste are flowing into island areas, increasing inconvenience for island residents,” and urged, “Marine workers should pay attention to marine environmental conservation by properly disposing of waste.”
