Park Gang-su, Mayor of Mapo District, Fined 900,000 Won for Election Law Violation... Retains Mayoral Position
Seoul Western District Court Criminal Division 11 (Chief Judge Bae Seong-jung) Sentences Park Gang-su, Mayor of Mapo-gu, to a Fine of 900,000 Won for Violation of the Public Official Election Act on the Morning of the 22nd at 10 AM
Park Gang-su, mayor of Mapo District, was fined 900,000 won for violating election laws after greeting Mapo District Office employees a week before the June 1 local elections, allowing him to retain his position as mayor in the trial held on the morning of the 22nd.
The Criminal Division 11 of the Seoul Western District Court (Presiding Judge Bae Seong-jung) sentenced Park Gang-su, mayor of Mapo District, who was indicted for violating the Public Official Election Act, to a fine of 900,000 won at 10 a.m. that day.
The court stated, "This is a serious matter as it involved election campaigning prohibited by the Public Official Election Act, which is the foundation of democratic politics," and added, "The fact that the illegal election campaigning occurred close to the election date also worsens the nature of the offense." However, the court considered that Mayor Park did not wear campaign clothing or badges indicating his candidacy and merely exchanged greetings, and that the offense was unlikely to have had a significant impact on the election results.
Mayor Park was indicted without detention on charges of campaigning to employees while visiting offices within the Mapo District Office on May 25 of last year. The prosecution requested a fine of 1.5 million won, but the court ruled a fine of 900,000 won.
As a result, Mayor Park can continue to carry out his duties as the elected mayor of Mapo District for the 8th term without any issues.
Since being elected mayor of Mapo District last year, Mayor Park has been recognized by local residents as a "mayor who truly works hard" through projects such as the creation of the 'Red Road' near Hongdae Entrance and preparing filial piety meals for the elderly.
Mayor Park is also known as a "field mayor" who visits sites several times a day. His attitude of saving even a single won from the district budget is acknowledged not only by district officials but also by the district council, with the prevailing opinion being, "He is a mayor with integrity ingrained in his body and who saves the budget like no other."
