Jung-gu District Office in Seoul (Mayor Kim Gil-seong) and the Korea Tourism Organization are collaborating to revitalize local tourism.
As the COVID-19 pandemic subsides, the number of foreign tourists has surged. With the global popularity of K-content and the full reopening to Chinese group tourists, the influx of visitors to Korea is expected to continue. There is a growing call to upgrade Jung-gu’s Myeong-dong Tourism Special Zone and Dongdaemun Tourism Special Zone from mere shopping destinations to attractive tourist spots infused with engaging stories.
Responding to these demands, Jung-gu, known as Seoul’s “Tourism No.1 District,” will sign a memorandum of understanding with the Korea Tourism Organization on September 25 to develop high-quality tourism content that reflects the region’s characteristics. By the end of next year, Jung-gu and the Korea Tourism Organization will cooperate to develop cultural tourism killer content (influential core content) and join forces to promote tourism special zone festivals both online and offline, as well as attract domestic and international tourists.
The first collaboration between Jung-gu and the Korea Tourism Organization was the “Visit Korea Year, Smiley Myeong-dong” event held on the 21st around the Myeong-dong Arts Theater area (photo). Tourists were welcomed with piano performances and K-pop flash mob shows, followed by a parade from Myeong-dong Arts Theater to Noon Square.
On the same day, a tourism promotion booth was operated around the Octagonal Pavilion where the Namsan beacon lighting ceremony took place. Tourists who participated and subscribed via Instagram and YouTube on-site were able to join a roulette event and receive souvenirs.
To commemorate the 2023-2024 Visit Korea Year Welcome Week, a promotional booth will also be set up in front of the Myeong-dong Arts Theater from September 26 to October 4. The booth will offer tourism information and interpretation services, opportunities to try on tailored hanbok, traditional craft making, and traditional games experience programs.

Kim Gil-seong, Mayor of Jung-gu, stated, “While we have focused on maintaining tourism order in Myeong-dong so far, it is now time to concentrate more on developing attractive content.
