Armenia-Azerbaijan, Conflict De-escalation Under Russian Peacekeepers' Mediation
The situation entered a resolution phase just one day after the outbreak of armed conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan, mediated by Russian peacekeepers.
On the 20th (local time), according to Russia's Interfax news agency, the Armenian autonomous forces in the Nagorno-Karabakh region, a disputed territory, agreed to disarm their autonomous troops following mediation by the Russian side, which has peacekeepers stationed locally.
The Armenian autonomous forces stated, as reported by AFP, that discussions between authorities will proceed regarding ensuring the safety of the Armenian residents in Nagorno-Karabakh and the integration of the disputed area into Azerbaijan.
Earlier, the Azerbaijani Ministry of Defense announced in a statement that it had launched an "anti-terror operation" by shelling Armenian autonomous forces' positions in Nagorno-Karabakh the previous day.
