The Launch of Efforts to Attract 'Gyeonggi International Airport'... Advisory Committee Formed and Research Project Initiated
Gyeonggi Province has formed an advisory committee for the ‘Gyeonggi International Airport,’ a key project of the 8th elected administration, and has commenced a research project to establish its vision and implementation plan.
On the 20th, Gyeonggi Province held the appointment ceremony for the ‘Gyeonggi Airport Attraction Advisory Committee’ members and a kickoff meeting for the ‘Research Project to Establish the Vision and Implementation Plan for the Construction of Gyeonggi International Airport’ at the Suwon Convention Center, exchanging opinions on the direction of the project.
The Gyeonggi Airport Attraction Advisory Committee is established and operated under the ‘Ordinance on Support for the Attraction and Construction Promotion of Gyeonggi Province International Airport’ and will conduct reviews and provide advice on the overall project, including research for attracting and constructing Gyeonggi International Airport, development of the surrounding area, and public discussions.
At the first plenary meeting, the committee elected its chairperson, approved operational rules, received reports on the progress and plans for Gyeonggi International Airport, and provided advice related to the attraction and construction of the airport.
The committee is composed of four subcommittees: General Aviation, Air Logistics, Regional Development, and Environment & Communication. It consists of 20 members, including 2 provincial assembly members, 14 external experts, and 4 related government officials.
Lee Heon-su, Honorary Professor at Korea Aerospace University, who was elected as the chairperson of the Gyeonggi Airport Attraction Advisory Committee, stated, "The construction of Gyeonggi International Airport is not only about operating and activating the airport itself but also about leading the development of Gyeonggi Province and South Korea through the development of surrounding areas." He added, "I will do my best to fulfill the given role for the successful construction of Gyeonggi International Airport."
This research project will be conducted by Ajou University as the project executor over 11 months until August next year.
The main contents of the project include ▲ analysis of the necessity of constructing Gyeonggi International Airport and aviation demand conditions ▲ presentation of multiple candidate sites considering comprehensive factors such as airspace rights, minimizing environmental damage, surrounding transportation infrastructure, and industrial connectivity ▲ environmentally friendly development plans for the hinterland linked to tourism, logistics, and industry for each candidate site.
Expert consultations will be conducted during the research project process.
Gyeonggi Province plans to propose that the results of the research project on the construction of Gyeonggi International Airport be reflected in the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport’s ‘7th Comprehensive Airport Development Plan (2026?2030).’
