Busan City Conducts Negotiations for Hosting the 2030 Busan World Expo with Fisheries Ministers and Vice Ministers from 14 Countries

Negotiations and Promotion Targeting Fisheries Ministers and Vice Ministers from 14 Countries Including Thailand and Africa
Busan City will engage in negotiation and promotional activities to attract the 2030 Busan World Expo, targeting fisheries ministers and vice ministers from 14 countries visiting Busan to attend the ‘2023 World Fisheries Village Conference (1st edition).’
The 14 participating countries include 3 from Asia (Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Indonesia), 5 from Oceania (Vanuatu, Kiribati, Tuvalu, Tonga, Fiji), 2 from Latin America (Peru, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines), and 4 from Africa (Zanzibar, Senegal, Comoros, Algeria).
The 2023 World Fisheries Village Conference will be held for the first time in the world from September 19 to 21 at the Busan Port International Exhibition & Convention Center, under the theme “One Ocean, One Fisheries Village: A Great Voyage Toward the Future.” The conference aims to explore solutions to overcome the global fisheries village crisis and seek sustainable development plans for fisheries communities worldwide.
The event consists of various lectures, panel discussions, exhibitions, and seminars, hosted by the Korea Maritime Institute (KMI) and supported by various international organizations including the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).
Fisheries ministers and vice ministers from 14 countries including Pacific island nations and African countries will attend, along with about 100 fisheries-related officials from over 30 countries such as the United States, United Kingdom, Germany, Japan, Italy, Greece, and Norway.
To develop and implement diverse solutions to fisheries village issues among developed, developing, and least developed countries, the conference will be held on a rotating basis by continent, with the founding country, the Republic of Korea, hosting for three years from 2023 to 2025.
First, on the 20th at 1:30 PM, before the opening ceremony of the World Fisheries Village Conference, the city will invite fisheries ministers and vice ministers from the 14 countries to the North Port Redevelopment Promotion Center to introduce the North Port area, the candidate site for the 2030 Busan World Expo.
By providing detailed on-site explanations of the main and sub-themes and core values of the 2030 Busan World Expo, the city aims to enhance their understanding of the Expo.
Next, at 2:30 PM, Mayor Park Hyung-joon will deliver a welcoming speech at the opening ceremony of the 2023 World Fisheries Village Conference, introducing the 2030 Busan World Expo as a platform for mutual cooperation among global fisheries villages and for resolving fisheries crises, explaining the rationale for hosting the Expo in Busan, and requesting their support.
Later, at 6:30 PM, the city will hold a welcoming reception chaired by Mayor Park Hyung-joon at the Westin Chosun Hotel in Haeundae, where he will explain the charm and capabilities of Busan as the candidate city for the 2030 Busan World Expo, aiming to build consensus for the bid.

Mayor Park Hyung-joon stated, “The decline in fishery resources, aging populations, and sea level rise caused by the climate crisis threaten our very survival, but fisheries villages are the places where innovation that turns these crises into opportunities is happening first and fastest. The 2030 Busan World Expo will be a platform where innovations to solve fisheries village crises take place, and beyond the development of fisheries villages and the fishing industry, it will be a platform to jointly seek solutions to global challenges.” He plans to request their support for the bid.
