Seeking Future Directions... UNIST Hosts 'Carbon Neutrality Symposium 2023'
Domestic experts gathered in one place to explore the future direction of carbon neutrality.
The Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology (UNIST) Carbon Neutrality Convergence Institute announced on the 18th that it held the ‘UNIST Carbon Neutrality Symposium 2023’ at the university headquarters auditorium.
The event was organized to diagnose the current status of carbon neutrality and discuss transition strategies toward a carbon-neutral society, with experts from various fields such as environmental science, policy, and business management coming together to share ideas.
The symposium consisted of a total of three sessions. In the first session, chaired by UNIST Professor Song Chang-geun, presentations were given by Professor Song, Professor Ahn Young-hwan of Sookmyung Women’s University, and Professor Woo Jeong-heon of Konkuk University. They focused on current issues such as South Korea’s greenhouse gas reduction policies and other carbon neutrality response policies.
The second session mainly examined the economic impact of carbon neutrality. Professor Jeong Ha-il of Seoul National University of Science and Technology chaired this session. Professor Jeong, Executive Director Ryu Jong-gi of EY Han Young, and Director Lim Cheol-soo of the National Institute of Environmental Research presented on EG management and the European Union’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism.
The third session addressed transitional changes and acceptability in social systems encompassing urban areas, environment, and disasters, seeking social changes occurring during the carbon neutrality transition period and their countermeasures. The session was chaired by Professor Jeong Su-jong of Seoul National University. Presentations were given by Professor Jeong, Professor Kim Eun-sung of Kyung Hee University, and Jeong Hwi-cheol, Director of the National Climate Crisis Adaptation Center at the Korea Environment Institute.
Kim Sung-yeop, Director of the UNIST Carbon Neutrality Convergence Institute, said in his welcoming remarks, “It is meaningful to have created a place for multifaceted discussions with experts from various fields to respond to the carbon-neutral era,” adding, “This symposium will also be a good opportunity to find UNIST’s research and education strategies for carbon neutrality.”
