Prospects for Income Increase of Olbyeo Rice Producing Farms

Boseong-gun, Jeollanam-do announced that on the 14th, it held the completion ceremony for the ‘Boseong Ungchi Olbyeossal Processing Factory and Comprehensive Processing Support Center’ built in Yongban-ri, Ungchi-myeon to enhance the added value of Ungchi Olbyeossal and increase non-agricultural income.

About 200 people attended the completion ceremony, including Kim Cheol-woo, the governor of Boseong-gun, Moon Byung-wan, the head of Boseong Nonghyup, and Olbyeossal producing farmers. The event proceeded in the order of a pre-ceremony performance, project progress report, commemorative speech, congratulatory speech, ribbon-cutting ceremony, and facility tour.

The Boseong Ungchi Olbyeossal Processing Factory and Comprehensive Processing Support Center is part of a local industry promotion project that has been underway for about five years since 2019. Through a subsidy project, a total of approximately 3 billion KRW was invested. The processing factory covers a site area of 900 pyeong, with Olbyeossal drying facilities of 120 pyeong, steaming facilities of 47 pyeong, and the comprehensive processing support center covers a site of 307 pyeong with a building area of 104 pyeong.

The comprehensive processing support center is equipped with major facilities such as processing rooms, development rooms, and packaging rooms, as well as 14 pieces of equipment including grain roasters, grinders, and rice snack machines, fulfilling its purpose of supporting comprehensive services through the installation and operation of shared processing facilities.

Boseong-gun has currently succeeded in commercializing two types of Boseong Ungchi Olbyeossal puffed rice snacks and two types of rice crackers.

The Boseong Ungchi Olbyeossal Comprehensive Processing Center is expected to greatly help increase the income of Boseong residents and Olbyeossal producing farmers and secure new growth engines in the future.

Moon Byung-wan, head of Boseong Agricultural Cooperative, said, “Through the establishment of the Boseong Ungchi Olbyeossal Comprehensive Processing Center, we plan to produce 300 tons of Ungchi Olbyeossal annually and expand the processing industry further by using Olbyeossal nurungji (scorched rice), puffing, and rice crackers as raw materials.”

Kim Cheol-woo, governor of Boseong-gun, stated, “Based on the achievements of the Boseong Ungchi Olbyeossal rural convergence industry, we will take a step forward as a high value-added industry with expected sustainable growth. We will continue to strive to foster regional specialized resources and revitalize the industry.”

Meanwhile, Boseong-gun and Boseong Nonghyup have been investing in various business areas to revitalize the processing industry of ‘Boseong Ungchi Olbyeossal,’ the 71st geographical indication for agricultural products in Korea. These efforts include strengthening producer capabilities and network building, developing processed products, securing patent intellectual property rights, media promotion through TV, YouTube, and radio, online promotion, and establishing distribution channels through online shopping malls and offline stores.
