10% Increase in SKY Early Admission Applicants... "More Confident Applications Due to Killer Question Removal"
Decrease in High School Seniors but Rising Competition Rate
Many Graduates Also Seem to Join Early Admission
Competition Rates Increase at Ewha Womans University and Kyung Hee University
This year, the competition rates for early admission at major universities in the Seoul area have increased. In particular, the number of applicants to the 'SKY (Seoul National University, Korea University, Yonsei University)' universities rose by 10%. It appears that the number of applicants applying with confidence increased as the difficulty of the CSAT is expected to decrease due to the policy of excluding killer questions.
The application period for early admission for the 2024 College Scholastic Ability Test (CSAT) ends on the 15th. Universities nationwide will complete early admission applications by this date.
According to Jongno Academy on this day, the number of early admission applicants to Seoul National University, Yonsei University, and Korea University increased by 7,675 compared to last year. The average competition rate rose to 12.16 to 1, up from 11.43 to 1 last year.
This is related to a decrease in the number of current students applying for the CSAT this year and an increase in graduates. As the possibility of excluding high-difficulty questions in this year's CSAT increased, it is analyzed that top-tier examinees confident in the CSAT applied with confidence in early admission.
In particular, the fact that a significant number of repeat test takers applied for early admission seems to have influenced the rise in competition rates. Jongno Academy stated, "The number of current students registering for the CSAT this year decreased by 23,593 from 350,239 last year to 326,646, and considering the rise in early admission competition rates, it is estimated that a considerable number of repeat test takers applied for early admission."
Seoul National University’s competition rate rose from 6.86 to 1 last year to 8.84 to 1, and Yonsei University’s increased from 12.69 to 1 to 14.62 to 1. On the other hand, Korea University’s competition rate fell from 14.9 to 1 last year to 12.92 to 1. According to Etoos, Korea University’s competition rate declined because a new condition was introduced in the academic excellence track that prohibits overlapping applications with the school recommendation track, leading to a decrease in applicants.
Other major universities in the Seoul area also saw slight increases in competition rates. Ewha Womans University closed with a competition rate of 13.45 to 1 this year, up from 12.86 to 1 last year. Kyung Hee University also rose from 22.9 to 1 to 23.57 to 1. Konkuk University (22.74 to 1 → 25.83 to 1) and University of Seoul (17.97 to 1 → 19.56 to 1) also experienced increases in competition rates.
