Gyeonggi-do Establishes Scientific Environmental Management System Including Scanning LiDAR
Gyeonggi Province is set to establish a scientific environmental management system utilizing advanced monitoring equipment such as scanning LiDAR.
The Gyeonggi Provincial Office of Metropolitan Environmental Management announced on the 15th that it will promote the establishment of a scientific environmental management system using advanced monitoring equipment, including scanning LiDAR, which can measure air pollution concentrations within a 5km radius by emitting laser beams into the atmosphere and measuring fine dust within 30 minutes.
To this end, on the 14th, the Metropolitan Environmental Management Office installed a scanning LiDAR for monitoring air pollution sources on the rooftop of the 2nd campus of Korea Polytechnic University. After a pilot operation until the end of the year, it will officially monitor air pollution sources in the Siwha National Industrial Complex starting in 2024.
Additionally, the Metropolitan Environmental Management Office will measure road air pollution levels within the industrial complex using a mobile measurement vehicle and utilize drones to measure real-time air pollution levels at workplace emission outlets, thereby establishing a comprehensive air pollution monitoring system.
The office also plans to analyze air pollution measurement results obtained through advanced monitoring equipment to develop proactive and long-term management plans for air pollutant emission facilities.
Furthermore, when high concentrations of air pollution are detected, on-site inspections of surrounding workplaces will be conducted to check environmental management status, and if a workplace is suspected of poor management, samples will be collected. If a violation is confirmed, administrative actions will be taken along with environmental consulting to support facility improvement and supplementation.
Kim Sang-cheol, head of the Metropolitan Environmental Management Office, emphasized, "It is time to change the environmental management system to meet the expectations of residents. We will continuously strive to improve the efficiency of workplace monitoring using advanced monitoring equipment and ensure proactive environmental management."
