HD Hyundai is striving to discover outstanding artificial intelligence (AI) talent within the group and secure external experts.

HD Hyundai announced on the 14th that it will hold the AI hackathon competition 'AI Challenge' starting from the 25th. The AI hackathon will run for one and a half months until November 10th this year, and domestic university and graduate students as well as HD Hyundai employees can freely participate. A hackathon is a portmanteau of hacking and marathon. It refers to a collaborative project to discover ideas and solve problems using software within a limited time frame.

HD Hyundai organized this competition to secure excellent talent with AI capabilities and to discover and apply creative ideas to solve real-world problems. Accordingly, the problems used in the competition will be related to the group’s core businesses.

This is the first time that the AI hackathon, which was previously held independently by affiliates within the group, has been expanded to the entire HD Hyundai group.

The preliminary round will be held online for six weeks from the 25th to November 1st, during which participants can freely solve and submit the publicly released tasks. The final round to select the winning teams will be held on November 10th at the HD Hyundai Global R&D Center (GRC) in Pangyo, Gyeonggi Province, targeting the top 10 teams from the preliminaries.

Winning teams will receive a total prize of 20 million KRW, including 5 million KRW for the grand prize and 3 million KRW for the excellence award. In particular, university and graduate student teams will receive benefits such as exemption from document screening (for graduating students) and conversion to recruitment internships (for enrolled students) along with the prize money.

Kim Young-ok, Executive Director of AI Strategy at HD Hyundai, said, "AI is a technology that can bring fundamental innovation to industrial sites," adding, "We expect to actively attract outstanding AI talent and strengthen HD Hyundai’s AI capabilities through this competition."

Meanwhile, HD Hyundai continues to make efforts to revitalize the AI ecosystem within the group. In 2021, it held the ‘Big Data & AI University Student Competition’ for domestic university and graduate students, and in December last year, it co-hosted the ‘HD Hyundai AI Forum (HAIF),’ an industry-academia-research forum in the AI field, with Seoul National University.
