Yangcheon-gu Removes Fallen Leaves from Over 7,000 Storm Drains in Preparation for Autumn Typhoons
Secured 500 Million Won for Disputes: Additional Dredging and Cleaning of 22km Habitual Flooding Sewers and Over 7,000 Rainwater Inlets by October
Yangcheon-gu (District Mayor Lee Gi-jae) announced that it will carry out additional dredging work on sewers and rainwater inlets in flood-prone areas and requested dredging sites until October to prepare for autumn typhoons and localized heavy rains.
This work aims to prevent flood damage during heavy rains by removing various sediments, garbage, and fallen leaves, considering that some parts of Seoul were flooded last year due to accumulated fallen leaves. Currently, the district has about 22,600 rainwater inlets and a total of 387 km of sewer pipes.
Previously, the district proactively dredged 96 km of local sewer lines and 22,500 rainwater inlets until last month to eliminate odors and prevent flood damage caused by heavy rains.
For this additional dredging project, the district will invest an emergency dredging budget of 500 million KRW secured from Seoul City to carry out dredging and cleaning work on 22 km of sewers in key management areas (frequent flood zones) and about 7,000 rainwater inlets where illegal dumping is frequent and flooding is possible due to fallen leaves until October.
The emergency sewer dredging target areas are a total of eight locations: two in Mok 1-dong, two in Mok 5-dong, one in Sinwol 4-dong, and one each in Sinjeong 3, 4, and 6-dong. The district plans to remove 1,069㎡ of sediment using heavy equipment such as excavators, dump trucks, dredging vehicles, and specialized personnel.
In addition, the district will frequently conduct water cleaning work mainly on sewers in areas where odors often occur, such as densely populated residential areas, restaurant districts, and markets, and will simultaneously carry out pipeline improvement work to minimize flooding.
