Government Official Booked for Embezzling Public Property Worth Hundreds of Millions of Won
A high-ranking public official affiliated with Gwangsan District Office in Gwangju Metropolitan City has been booked for embezzling public property worth several million won.
On the 13th, Gwangju Gwangsan Police Station announced that they are investigating Mr. A, a Grade 4 (Director-level) public official of Gwangsan District Office, on charges of embezzlement in the course of duty.
Mr. A is accused of embezzling public property worth a total of 6.5 million won, including camera lenses, woodworking tool sets, and mobile phones, over about two years starting from June 2014, when he was dispatched as an executive to the Facilities Management Corporation, a public enterprise under the district.
The purchased items were reportedly for Mr. A’s personal hobbies, unrelated to the corporation’s work.
Mr. A is also suspected of using his position as head of the Administrative Welfare Center to hire family members and acquaintances as fixed-term workers.

Following guidelines that high-ranking public officials’ misconduct cases be investigated by the Provincial Police Agency, Gwangsan Police Station plans to transfer the case to the Anti-Corruption and Economic Crime Investigation Division of Gwangju Police Agency.
