Seoul's First Senior-Run Convenience Store 'Chakhan Sanghoe' Opens 3rd Branch... Providing Jobs to 30 Seniors Across 3 Chakhan Sanghoe Locations
Geumcheon-gu (Mayor Yu Seong-hoon) announced the opening of the third branch of Seoul's first convenience store run by senior citizens, 'Chakhan Sanghoe,' in Gasan-dong.
'Chakhan Sanghoe' is a convenience store staffed exclusively by senior employees. It was first opened on September 1, 2020, to provide high-quality jobs for the elderly. In 2021, the second branch was opened, and its operational success was recognized with the Gold Award in the policy category at the '2021 Local Autonomy Awards,' which honors outstanding cases nationwide.
The opening of the third branch was promoted through collaboration between the senior job agency Geumcheon Senior Club and BGF Retail (CU Convenience Store).
At the three Chakhan Sanghoe locations, a total of 30 senior citizens are responsible for all convenience store tasks, including product display, inventory management, and cashier duties. Operating hours are from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. on weekdays, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturdays, and closed on Sundays and public holidays. The wage is set at 11,160 KRW per hour, applying the Geumcheon-type living wage, which is higher than the minimum wage.
Kim Myung-ri, hired as an employee at the third branch, said, "I am proud to become a new employee in my old age thanks to the support of Geumcheon-gu and Geumcheon Senior Club. I will work hard with my colleagues to make this store an excellent branch."
