Mokpo Coast Guard Conducts Special Inspection on Seafood Origin Labeling
Operation of Special Task Force for Intensive Crackdown Before and After Chuseok Holiday
Mokpo Maritime Police Station (Chief Kim Hae-cheol) announced on the 12th that it will operate a special task force for crackdowns on imported seafood and other products from the 11th of this month to the 6th of next month to ensure the safe distribution order of seafood for ancestral rites in celebration of Chuseok.
The main targets of the crackdown are △ smuggling and distribution of agricultural, marine, and livestock products △ mislabeling of origin △ market distribution order disruption caused by hoarding and stockpiling △ sales of seafood past expiration dates or designated for disposal, and other acts that threaten the safety of the public’s food supply.
In particular, to address the decline in seafood consumption due to the discharge of contaminated water from Fukushima, Japan, and the livelihood difficulties of marine and fisheries workers, a strong crackdown will be conducted in parallel with the second special inspection of imported seafood jointly promoted by the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries and the Korea Coast Guard.
A Mokpo Coast Guard official stated, “We will eradicate crimes that threaten the safety of the public’s food supply, such as those involving seafood that exploit the Chuseok holiday, and acts that cause confusion in commercial distribution order, which increase public anxiety, to stabilize people’s livelihoods and revitalize the economy of ordinary citizens.” He urged, “Please actively report any violations found.”
