'Green Bio Industry Development Hub' International Conference with Participation from 7 Countries Held in Pohang

Pohang TP Signs Green Bio Industry Promotion MOU with Lithuanian Universities and Companies
On the 7th and 8th of last month, Pohang City held the '2023 Green Bio Industry International Conference' at the POSCO International Hall conference room.
On the 7th, Pohang City signed a mutual business agreement for the development of the green bio industry with Pohang Technopark, BioApp, JinCell Biotech, LatBio, and Lithuanian institutions and companies including VMU Agricultural University, Caszyme, and Nando.
View original imageHeld in conjunction with the '2023 Gyeongbuk Bio Industry Expo,' this conference was attended by 150 industry-academia-research stakeholders, including 19 domestic and international experts from seven countries such as the United Kingdom, the United States, and Lithuania, Lithuanian Ambassador Ri?ardas ?lepavi?ius, and Kim Ki-yeon, head of the Green Bio Industry Team at the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs.
The conference was divided into three main sections: ▲Green bio pharmaceuticals and material development ▲Veterinary pharmaceuticals and cultured meat ▲Gene editing technology and the green bio industry. Various lectures and in-depth discussions were held. Additionally, about 20 students from Gyeongbuk Bio Meister High School, which signed a business agreement with Pohang Technopark Advanced Bio Convergence Center in May last year to foster specialized personnel in the bio-pharmaceutical field, attended to listen to the gene editing technology lectures.
Prior to the conference, Pohang Technopark, BioApp, JinCell Biotech, LatBio, and Lithuanian institutions and companies including VMU Agriculture Academy, Caszyme, and Nando signed a mutual business agreement to foster the green bio industry.
The agreement includes ▲Administrative support for fostering the green vaccine and veterinary pharmaceutical industries ▲Academic and technological exchanges ▲Cooperation in workforce development and investment expansion ▲Joint use of facilities and equipment ▲Discovery of joint projects.
On the 7th, the conference began with a keynote speech by Professor Julian Ma of St. George's, University of London, a world-renowned scholar in the field of green bio molecular agriculture, titled 'A New Approach to Plant-Based Recombinant Protein Development.' This was followed by a presentation on the 'Current Status of Zika Virus Green Vaccine Development' by Son Eun-joo, CEO of BioApp.
Subsequently, Kim Jae-hong, president of the Korea Animal Pharmaceuticals Association, delivered a keynote speech on the current status and prospects of the animal pharmaceutical industry, followed by a lecture by Kim Min-gyu, CEO of MK Biotech, on 'Placental Stem Cells and Companion Animal Treatments.'
On the 8th, Bjorn Orvar, CSO of ORF Genetics in Iceland, gave a keynote speech titled '20 Years of Molecular Agriculture and the Direction of Large-Scale Barley Cell Culture,' followed by a presentation by Giedrius Gasiunas, CSO of Caszyme, on 'Diverse Applications of CRISPR-Cas Techniques for Genome Editing.'
As a side event, Pohang Technopark hosted a 'Green Bio International Cooperation Meeting' among research institutions and companies from Korea, the United Kingdom, and Lithuania. Through this, Pohang is expected to play a central role as a hub for green bio technology accumulation and industry promotion, centered on the Green Bio Venture Campus and the veterinary pharmaceutical industry base (Green Vaccine Demonstration Support Center), scheduled for completion in 2025.
Mayor Lee Kang-deok stated, “This event will serve as a catalyst for Pohang to become a green bio technology hub and establish itself as a global center for the green bio industry, actively supporting the nurturing of promising venture companies and revitalizing job creation.”
