'Jeong Yulseong Park' Kang Gijeong Transferred to Police in National Security Law Case
The police will take charge of investigating the case in which Gwangju Mayor Kang Gi-jeong was accused of violating the National Security Law in relation to the Jeong Yul-seong Historical Park development project.
On the 8th, the Gwangju Police Agency announced that it plans to investigate the case after receiving it from the prosecution.
There are currently a total of four accusations against Mayor Kang, and the cases received by the prosecution were deemed outside their direct investigation scope and thus handed over to the police.
Im Seong-rok, an advisor to the Republic of Korea Special Forces Veterans Association, filed a complaint with the Gwangju District Prosecutors' Office on the 31st of last month, accusing Mayor Kang of violating the National Security Law (charges of praise and encouragement).
Advisor Im stated, "Jeong Yul-seong (1914?1976) composed a march that led the North Korean and Chinese armies in the invasion of the Republic of Korea, ending his life on the side of communists," and claimed, "Mayor Kang is aware of this fact but is wasting 4.8 billion won of citizens' tax money to create a memorial park."
Right-leaning civic groups such as the Barun Society Citizens' Association and Active Free Citizens, led by the Public Authority Monitoring Center, also filed a complaint with the Gwangju Police Agency on the 1st, accusing Mayor Kang of violating the National Security Law.
