On the 6th, Damyang-gun in Jeollanam-do announced on the 7th that it had signed a sister city agreement with Yibin City, Sichuan Province, China, to promote mutual development through exchange and cooperation.
At the signing ceremony, Damyang-gun and Yibin agreed to cooperate in various fields such as the bamboo industry, economy, culture, tourism, and education, based on their common denominator of ‘Jukhyang (竹鄕)’, and to promote mutual prosperity through the activation of private exchanges.
Yibin, home to the largest bamboo forest in China, Chunan Bamboo Sea, covers an area of 13,283㎢ and has a population of approximately 5.56 million. It is a place where bamboo tourism resources and related industries such as crafts have developed.
In particular, Chunan Bamboo Sea (蜀南竹海) is widely known as the world's largest natural bamboo forest in terms of concentrated area.
Damyang-gun, the hometown of bamboo, is an ecological tourism city visited by more than 7 million tourists annually, based on abundant tourism resources such as Juknokwon, the largest bamboo garden in Korea, and Meta Provence.
Additionally, the Damyang bamboo fields enrich local biodiversity and have been recognized for their conservation value due to the natural formation of agricultural cultural landscapes with structural characteristics, leading to their registration as a ‘Globally Important Agricultural Heritage System’ in 2020.
The county continues to seek development plans in various fields such as tourism and economy through expanding exchanges with domestic and international sister and friendship cities.
