Yoon Attends Korea-ASEAN Summit... Strengthening Economic Cooperation and Seeking Future Growth Engines (Comprehensive)
President Yoon's Second Day in Indonesia
Strengthening ASEAN Youth AI and Digital Capabilities...Sustainable Development in Four Mekong Countries
Yoon "Firm Support for ASEAN Centrality"
On the second day of his visit to Indonesia on the 6th, President Yoon Suk-yeol outlined concrete implementation plans for the Korea-ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) Solidarity Initiative at the Korea-ASEAN Summit. These plans include strengthening ASEAN youth's capabilities in artificial intelligence (AI) and digital utilization, as well as promoting sustainable development in the four Mekong River basin countries (Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, and Vietnam). The strategy aims not only to remain at the level of one-time official development assistance (ODA) but also to enhance economic cooperation between Korea and ASEAN countries in infrastructure and advanced industries, thereby securing future growth engines. Additionally, the initiative envisions achieving economic outcomes in the security sector through defense industry and maritime security cooperation.

View original imagePresident Yoon explained these plans during the Korea-ASEAN Summit held at the Jakarta Convention Center (JCC) in Indonesia that morning, stating, "The Korea-ASEAN Solidarity Initiative is based on South Korea's firm support for ASEAN centrality and ASEAN's perspective on the Indo-Pacific." Previously, in November last year at the ASEAN Summit in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, President Yoon announced the Korea-ASEAN Solidarity Initiative and the Korean version of the Indo-Pacific strategy, and since then, eight key priority tasks centered on freedom, peace, and prosperity have been selected and pursued. These eight priority tasks include development cooperation in future industries and infrastructure, strengthening maritime security, digital advanced technologies, nurturing future talents, and joint responses to climate crises and infectious diseases.
President Yoon emphasized to the ASEAN leaders that, based on full support for the ASEAN-led regional architecture through the 'Camp David Spirit' agreed upon by the leaders of Korea, the U.S., and Japan last month at Camp David, they have agreed to coordinate each country's Indo-Pacific strategies and explore new areas of cooperation. The ASEAN region, with its abundant resources, rapidly growing economy, and increasing population, is regarded as an emerging market that can replace China. In particular, the initiative intends to prevent the negative effects of past ASEAN regional development led by concentrated Chinese capital and to assist development in ways desired by ASEAN countries through cooperation among Korea, the U.S., and Japan. Accordingly, President Yoon plans to enter the ASEAN market, which is gaining economic and geopolitical importance, together with the U.S. and Japan, aiming to change the landscape of future economic and security cooperation.
President Yoon explained, "We have launched the annual Korea-U.S.-Japan Indo-Pacific Dialogue and newly established the 'Korea-U.S.-Japan Maritime Security Cooperation Framework' to support maritime security capabilities of ASEAN and Pacific island countries." Specifically, he detailed the 'Korea-ASEAN Digital Innovation Flagship Project (2024?2028)' aimed at strengthening AI capabilities and jointly developing foundational services for the ASEAN future generation, as well as development plans for the Mekong River basin countries. The presidential office notes that although the ASEAN region has a low average age and high potential for future cooperation, it still lacks advanced industrial infrastructure, making investment in the future generation essential for cooperation.
As part of this effort, President Yoon plans to attend the Korea-ASEAN AI Youth Festa to strengthen cooperation with Korea-ASEAN AI startups and provide an opportunity to enhance the capabilities of ASEAN youth. He also expressed the intention to build mutual cooperation with the Mekong River basin countries, which, based on their abundant resources, are key partners for diversifying Korea's advanced industrial supply chains.
Given that ASEAN countries have significant interest in defense due to regional issues such as the South China Sea disputes with China, there is a plan to create opportunities for exporting K-defense products, which are gaining global attention for their cost-effectiveness (performance relative to price).
