First Flight of Biojet Fuel (SAF) Cargo Plane... "Future Quality Standards to Be Established"
Trial Cargo Flight Operation on Incheon-LA Route Starting from the 5th
A cargo plane fueled with Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) will conduct a pilot flight. It is scheduled to operate a total of six times on the Incheon-Los Angeles (LA) route.
The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy and the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport announced on the 5th that SAF will be used to fuel a cargo flight on the Incheon→LA route for a pilot operation.
SAF is an eco-friendly aviation fuel made from raw materials such as waste cooking oil and household waste, which can reduce carbon emissions by up to 80% compared to conventional fossil fuel-based aviation fuel.
The first pilot flight is Korean Air flight KE207 (B777 cargo plane) departing from Incheon to LA at 5:45 PM on the same day. The fuel used will be mixed with 2% SAF, and a total of six flights (twice a month for three months) are planned. In the US, Europe, and other regions, SAF is certified to be mixed up to 50%.
This SAF pilot operation was promoted as a follow-up measure to the biofuel demonstration plan decided at the 3rd plenary meeting of the public-private joint 'Green Biofuel Activation Alliance' held on June 28. The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, the Korea Petroleum Management Service, Incheon International Airport Corporation, Korean Air, GS Caltex, and Korea Airports Corporation held several meetings to select the aircraft and flight routes necessary for the SAF pilot operation, as well as to establish fueling and operation procedures.

Yoo Beom-min, Director of the Resource Industry Policy Bureau at the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, said, "The data obtained from the first-ever domestic pilot flight using bio-aviation fuel on a national aircraft will be used to establish quality standards by the first half of next year, and we plan to promptly revise related laws and regulations." He added, "Along with this, the government will create an environment where our industry can actively invest in eco-friendly biofuels."
