Hanwha Ocean Unveils Green Ship Spec LNG Carrier for the First Time at 'Gastech 2023'
"Targeting the Eco-Friendly Ship Market"
Hanwha Ocean announced that it will participate in 'Gastech 2023,' held in Singapore for four days from the 5th to the 8th. Gastech, the world's largest eco-friendly ship and energy exhibition, is considered one of the world's top three international gas industry events alongside the World Gas Conference and LNG Conference. This year, more than 750 companies from over 100 countries are participating.
Hanwha Ocean will exhibit four types of eco-friendly ships at this exhibition. These include the Greenship-spec LNG carrier unveiled for the first time, an ammonia-powered 86,000 CBM-class ammonia carrier, a 70,000 CBM-class liquefied carbon dioxide carrier, and the LNG-FPSO built by Hanwha Ocean for the first time in the world.
Hanwha Ocean explained, "The ship we are focusing on the most at this exhibition is the LNG carrier equipped with Greenship specifications." Hanwha Ocean is the world leader in the LNG carrier market. According to data from Clarkson Research, a British shipbuilding and shipping analysis organization, one-quarter of the LNG carriers operating worldwide were built by Hanwha Ocean.

The Greenship-spec LNG carrier is a high-efficiency eco-friendly ship that suppresses greenhouse gas emissions and is also called a green ship. Hanwha Ocean has applied next-generation eco-friendly technologies such as rotor sails and carbon capture windows extensively to the Greenship LNG carrier. The rotor sail is a device that uses wind power to reduce ship fuel consumption, and Hanwha Ocean opened the world's first rotor sail testing center at its Geoje plant last year.
At this exhibition, Hanwha Ocean is also conducting a joint research agreement with the French classification society (BV) on a new method that can more quickly complete the structural strength evaluation of independent cargo tanks to be applied to dual-fuel propulsion container ships. They expect research cooperation and certification acquisition for the latest technologies from global classification societies.
Hanwha Power Systems is also participating in this Gastech. As a global energy equipment company, Hanwha Power Systems will introduce the ship lifetime service and eco-friendly retrofit business of the newly launched Ship Solutions Division through this exhibition and promote business synergy with Hanwha Ocean, including LNG solutions. Additionally, they plan to emphasize eco-friendly power generation and carbon reduction technologies by promoting hydrogen co-firing power generation solutions, supercritical carbon dioxide power generation systems, and high-pressure carbon dioxide compressors.
Hanwha Ocean is investing about 600 billion KRW to develop an 'eco-friendly propulsion system' based on ammonia, methanol, and hydrogen, and is also developing ammonia, carbon dioxide, and hydrogen carriers. Furthermore, they plan to secure smart ship technology capable of 'Level 4' fully autonomous navigation by 2030. Through these efforts, they aim to achieve sales exceeding 30 trillion KRW and operating profit over 5 trillion KRW by 2040.
