Symposium Held from August 31 to September 1
Special Lecture by Ian Riley, WCA President

The cement industry is advancing technological improvements through expanded international exchanges.

According to the Korea Cement Association on the 1st, the "50th Cement Symposium" was held from the previous day to this day at Sono Moon Resort in Danyang, Chungbuk. About 300 domestic and international cement and concrete experts, including executives and employees of the domestic cement industry and related academic circles, participated in the event.

The special lecture was delivered by Ian Riley, President of the World Cement Association (WCA), on the topic of "Current Status of the European Cement Industry and Carbon Reduction Measures." Additionally, Professor Sakai from Tokyo Institute of Technology, representing the Japanese cement industry, presented on "Research Trends of Low-Carbon Cement for Japan's Carbon Neutrality."

President Riley explained various carbon neutrality-related policies being promoted in Europe, such as the Emissions Trading System (ETS) and the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM). He also introduced the combined application effects of low-NOx combustion and Selective Non-Catalytic Reduction (SNCR) technologies to reduce nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions, one of the major environmental issues facing the cement industry. Riley emphasized, "As environmental regulations are expected to tighten further due to the depletion of carbon credits and soaring carbon prices in the near future, the cement industry must actively pursue improvements in energy efficiency, increase the use of alternative fuels, and develop CCUS technologies."

Lee Hyun-jun, Chairman of the Korea Cement Association, said in his opening remarks, "Over the past half-century, the Cement Symposium has grown into a venue for academic and technical information exchange involving industry, academia, and research institutes, achieving significant qualitative and quantitative results in published papers through internationalization. The special lectures and papers presented at this symposium will provide valuable information to help the domestic cement industry navigate pressing issues such as carbon neutrality and environmental regulations."

A total of 14 papers were submitted to this symposium, including Ssangyong C&E's "A Study on the Quality and Manufacturing Conditions of Limestone Powder Blended Cement" and the Korea Institute of Ceramic Engineering & Technology's "Development of Secondary Product Manufacturing Technology Applying Carbon Dioxide Reactive Curing Cement."
