Since ASEAN and India account for about 21% of Korea’s exports, his trip is interpreted as an opportunity for economic diplomacy. Chief Secretary Choi said, "Taking advantage of the ASEAN and G20 Summits, we will actively promote promising export sectors such as nuclear power, defense, and infrastructure, check the status of free trade agreement (FTA) negotiations and implementations by country, and intensively raise the difficulties faced by our companies."
President Yoon also plans to explore cooperation measures for diversifying advanced industry supply chains through multilateral meetings and bilateral talks. Since the importance of securing supply chains for essential core minerals such as lithium and copper, which are indispensable for advanced industries, has been elevated to the level of national security following the US-China trade conflict, cooperation with the ASEAN region, which has abundant deposits, is essential. Economic Chief Secretary Choi also explained at the briefing, "ASEAN and India are rich in core minerals and are strategic countries where our companies are expanding their presence to diversify supply chains. We will expand advanced industry cooperation with Indonesia and the Philippines, which are closely connected to our electric vehicle battery supply chains, and discuss cooperation plans within the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework, in which seven ASEAN countries and we participate together." President Yoon will hold bilateral talks with about 10 countries, including Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Cambodia, and the Cook Islands during the G20 Summit period, as well as India, Mauritius, Spain, and Argentina. Among these, the Korea-Indonesia Summit with President Joko Widodo is expected to yield various outcomes, including in defense and supply chains. At the G20 Summit, in addition to safeguarding the rule-based international order, President Yoon will emphasize South Korea’s concrete contribution plans to overcome climate change. The Presidential Office explained that this is part of responsible diplomacy aimed at Korea’s leap to becoming a global pivotal state, but the industry expects various business opportunities to arise through cooperation in overcoming the climate crisis.
Schedules for cooperation in the private sector economic fields such as supply chains and infrastructure between Korean and Indonesian companies have also been prepared. Regarding strengthening digital leadership, on the 6th of next month, President Yoon will attend the ASEAN Artificial Intelligence (AI) Youth Festa to support exchanges among future generations and encourage challenges. The ASEAN AI Youth Festa will involve digital companies and youth from Korea and ASEAN exchanging AI technologies. About 40 major company heads and CEOs, including Chung Eui-sun, Chairman of Hyundai Motor Group; Koo Kwang-mo, Chairman of LG Group; Shin Dong-bin, Chairman of Lotte Group; and Koo Ja-eun, Chairman of LS Group, are expected to attend.
