Cosmos Lab Co., Ltd. Selected for the Ministry of SMEs and Startups' 'Super-Gap Startup 1000+', Recognized for Safe Next-Generation Battery Technology
Startup Cosmos Lab Co., Ltd. (CEO Ju-hyuk Lee), which developed a next-generation water battery without fire hazards, was selected for the Ministry of SMEs and Startups' Super Gap Startup 1000+ Project in May.
The Super Gap Startup 1000+ Project is a five-year initiative investing 2 trillion KRW to foster deep-tech startups that will lead the global market in new industry sectors such as future mobility, eco-friendly energy, and system semiconductors. The 150 companies selected for this project overcame a competition rate of 13:1 and will receive various supports including up to 600 million KRW in commercialization funds over three years, an additional 500 million KRW for R&D, and global expansion support.
Cosmos Lab is a deep-tech startup that developed a next-generation battery fundamentally solving battery fire issues by using "water" as the electrolyte in its water battery. Through this technology, it was selected as a super gap startup in the future mobility sector for its potential to fundamentally resolve the critical fire problems of lithium-ion batteries that persist in mobility fields such as electric vehicles.
Additionally, Cosmos Lab’s water battery product was recognized as a new technology in safety fields including industry, disaster, and firefighting at the 6th Safety New Technology Contest hosted by the Ulsan Creative Economy Innovation Center this year, winning an excellence award. It also received the gold prize at the KEPCO International Invention Patent Exhibition hosted by Korea Electric Power Corporation last year, and the grand prize at the Korea Water Industry Innovation Competition hosted by the Korea Water Resources Corporation, confirming both the safety and technological excellence of the water battery.
Moreover, last year, Cosmos Lab won the Minister of Environment Award at the Shinhan Square Bridge IR HERO DAY hosted by the Ministry of Environment and Shinhan Bank, and also received three ministerial awards including the Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy Award (Public Technology Utilization Youth Startup Competition) and the Minister of Science and ICT Award (LAB START-UP 2022), continuously gaining recognition for its innovation in the public sector.
Furthermore, Cosmos Lab developed a stable battery for high temperatures through joint semiconductor equipment development with Samsung Electronics and is preparing for delivery. This year, it was selected as an open innovation company with CS WIND, the global No.1 wind tower company, and plans to proceed with business funding support and technological collaboration in the eco-friendly energy sector. It was also selected for the Berlin, Germany PoC program hosted by the Seoul Business Agency, with a collaboration project planned with Michelin, indicating ongoing demand for technology validation in the private sector as well.
