Seoul City: "No Cases Detected So Far in Radioactivity Tests of School Meal Seafood"
Confirming the '4-layer Safety Net' up to Consumption
Seoul City announced on the 31st that it prioritizes the safety and health of students, our future generation, by thoroughly checking and supplying safe seafood for school meal ingredients through a four-layer verification process from purchase to distribution and consumption stages.
According to the city, there have been no cases of harmful substances detected in radiation tests conducted on seafood ingredients for school meals so far. The scale of seafood ingredients supplied for school meals (elementary, middle, high schools, special schools, and kindergartens) through the Seoul Eco-friendly Distribution Center amounted to a total of 1,859 tons and 37.7 billion KRW last year, and as of the end of June this year, 866 tons and 18.9 billion KRW.
To ensure thorough management of school meal ingredients, the city has established a four-layer safety network involving inspection agencies, seafood suppliers, the Seoul Eco-friendly Distribution Center, and the Seoul Institute of Health and Environment, strengthening safety management of seafood ingredients for school meals.
Meanwhile, the city plans to conduct up to three inspections within this year in cooperation with seafood suppliers so that parents and school nutrition teachers can directly monitor the seafood delivered to schools. In July of this year, the city visited seafood supplier workplaces together with the School Meal Inspection Team to directly verify and inspect the safety of ingredients.
