Over 18,000 Births in June... Population Decline Continues for 44 Consecutive Months
Statistics Korea Announces June 2023 Population Trends
The number of births remained in the 18,000 range in June, following May. This is the lowest number ever recorded for June. The natural population decrease, where the number of deaths exceeds the number of births in a month, has continued for 44 consecutive months.
According to the "June 2023 Population Trends" released by Statistics Korea on the 30th, the number of births in June was 18,615, a decrease of 300 (-1.6%) compared to one year ago. This is the lowest number of births ever recorded for June since monthly statistics began in 1981.
The number of births has been declining year-on-year for 7 years and 7 months since December 2015. The crude birth rate, which is the number of births per 1,000 people, was 4.4, down 0.1 from one year ago.
The number of deaths increased by 1,900 (7.6%) from one year ago to 24,920. Due to the aging trend, the number of deaths is on the rise. With the number of deaths exceeding the number of births, the population naturally decreased by 8,250. This decline has continued for 44 months since November 2019. Except for Sejong (105 people), all other cities and provinces experienced a natural population decrease.
