Government Promotes Development of AI Model for Reservoir Water Level Prediction
Amid the increasing frequency of heavy rainfall due to climate change, the government is set to develop a ‘Reservoir Water Level Prediction Model’ to enhance public safety. Starting as early as the end of this year, the prediction model is expected to be used to manage the water levels of over 1,000 reservoirs nationwide.
The Ministry of the Interior and Safety’s Integrated Data Analysis Center announced on the 30th that it will develop an AI-based ‘Reservoir Water Level Prediction Model’ to forecast water level changes in reservoirs across the country by utilizing various real-time information affecting reservoir water levels.
The model development will be carried out through collaboration between the Ministry of the Interior and Safety’s Integrated Data Analysis Center and the Korea Rural Community Corporation, which manages rural reservoirs, with plans to complete development by December this year. During the model development process, reservoir operation data held by the Korea Rural Community Corporation and meteorological observation and forecast data from the Korea Meteorological Administration will be comprehensively utilized.
The Ministry of the Interior and Safety expects this model to serve as an important foundation for damage prevention and policy formulation related to localized heavy rainfall, which has been increasing in frequency every year.
