Goheung-gun Hosts Goheung Aerospace Cup National Surfing Competition

The Only National Surfing Competition in Honam Region Held

Goheung-gun, Jeollanam-do (Governor Gong Young-min) announced that the 3rd Goheung Aerospace Cup National Surfing Competition will be held for two days from September 2 to 3 at Namyeol Sunrise Beach in Goheung.

Now in its third year, this competition is the only surfing event in Honam and is expected to play a significant role in revitalizing the local economy and promoting surfing as a recreational sport by linking with tourism and regional festivals.

As a national competition, about 300 athletes and enthusiasts from all over the country will participate, showcasing their honed skills to celebrate the end of summer with a surfer festival event. Free lessons and beginner events are also prepared for the general public, aiming to attract many surfing novices and tourists.

An official from the Goheung Surfing Association said, “There were many ups and downs in organizing this competition, but we have prepared thoroughly to hold a successful event.”

A county official stated, “We expect a large crowd, and since the competition is held at the beach, we will actively support ensuring safety above all else.”

The ‘Namyeol Sunrise Beach,’ where the competition is held, has been a famous surfing spot hosting annual surfing competitions since 2014. With surfing selected as an official sport for the 2024 Paris Olympics, the first national team selection event in Korea was held here in 2019.

Meanwhile, in response to the Fukushima nuclear wastewater discharge, Goheung-gun is establishing plans according to the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries and Jeollanam-do’s response plans, strengthening safety inspections at each discharge stage. They are also simplifying radiation safety information provided by the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries into a ‘traffic light’ format and displaying it on street electronic boards to ensure participating athletes can surf with peace of mind.
