Samsung Food features all necessary functions for the entire food lifestyle in one platform, from pre-preparation stages such as recipe search and saving, meal planning, and ingredient management to cooking and content sharing.
In particular, it offers AI-based personalized services and provides an easier and more convenient cooking experience by linking with Samsung kitchen appliances.
Park Chan-woo, Vice President of Samsung Electronics' Home Appliance Business Division, explained, "We have launched an integrated service that combines various food-related experiences and solutions such as health, cooking, recipe and food photo sharing into one." He added, "It includes recipe search and personalized recommendations, meal management, cooking device linkage, ingredient storage, as well as social elements for sharing the food I made."
Samsung Electronics developed food AI technology based on the technology of 'Whisk,' a UK recipe service company acquired in 2019, together with Samsung Research (SR) and developers from Samsung Electronics' home appliance division.
Samsung Electronics plans to link the Samsung Food platform with all of Samsung’s smart cooking appliances, including Bespoke Oven, Bespoke Induction, Bespoke Microwave, and Bespoke Cooker. Users only need to send customized recipe cooking settings from the mobile application (app) to the cooking appliances. It is also explained that future integration with brands other than Samsung will be pursued.
Within this year, Samsung Food will be linked with Samsung Health. It plans to provide optimized recipes and meal plans based on users’ BMI, body composition, calorie intake and consumption. Vice President Park said, "Samsung Food offers options to select dietary restrictions and health conditions such as diabetes or low-sodium diets," adding, "Later, when data such as blood pressure measured directly by Samsung Health is transmitted, meal plans will be automatically provided accordingly."
Next year, a service applying 'Vision AI' technology will be introduced, which provides nutritional information and recipes just by taking a photo of food.
Although the revenue model for Samsung Food has not yet been finalized, it is expected to be applicable in various ways. Initially, the strategy will focus on securing users. It is anticipated that a revenue model will be applied after securing at least 1 million global users. Vice President Park stated, "As the number of subscribers increases, a revenue model will also be possible," and added, "Since paid recipe services are common overseas, we are considering various options."
