Ministry of Government Legislation Conducts 'Customized Legal Education' for Over 270 Multicultural Families
Five Training Sessions in the First Half of This Year... Easy Explanation of Everyday Laws
Director Lee Wankyu: "We Will Expand and Develop Legal Education for Multicultural Families"
The Ministry of Government Legislation (Minister Lee Wankyu) announced on the 23rd that it conducted customized legal education visits for about 270 members of multicultural families in the first half of this year.
Marriage immigrant women and others are attending multicultural family legal education at Saerom Comprehensive Welfare Center in Sejong Special Self-Governing City.
The Ministry of Government Legislation provides education that explains everyday laws in an easy-to-understand manner to members of multicultural families who have difficulty settling in society due to a lack of understanding of Korean laws, in order to contribute to national happiness and social integration. While the program was piloted once a year in 2015 and 2016, the frequency has increased since 2017 to be held annually, and as of last month, a total of 1,791 people have completed the education.
The multicultural family legal education is conducted through a customized approach where instructors visit multicultural family support centers established in local governments. When face-to-face education is difficult due to the spread of COVID-19, education is also provided using an online system.
This year, a demand survey was conducted in January targeting multicultural family support centers nationwide. In March, education was provided at six institutions including Sejong Special Self-Governing City; in April, six institutions including Nowon-gu, Seoul; in May, Guri-si, Gyeonggi Province; and in June, two institutions including Asan-si, Chungnam Province, totaling 15 institutions. In the second half of the year, education is planned to be conducted in places such as Gangjin-gun, Jeonnam Province.
The legal education for multicultural families is divided into three major areas necessary for members of multicultural families to live daily life as members of Korean society: the ‘domestic settlement area,’ the ‘child-rearing area,’ and the ‘family legal issues area.’
In the domestic settlement area, laws related to nationality acquisition, social adaptation support, housing support, and employment support are covered; in the child-rearing area, laws concerning pregnancy and childbirth, childcare, education, and military service are taught; and in the family legal issues area, laws on domestic violence, divorce, and inheritance are the main topics.
