Urgent Meeting of the Our Sea Protection Verification TF
Yoon Jae-ok: "Will Demand Suspension of Discharge if Even Minor Changes Occur in Japan's Promise, Will Enforce It"
Regarding the Japanese government's decision to discharge contaminated water from the Fukushima nuclear power plant on the 24th, the People Power Party stated, "After thorough verification, it has been confirmed that there are no scientific or technical issues with the discharge plan," and promised, "If there are any changes, even minor ones, to the matters promised by Japan, we will demand an immediate halt to the discharge and ensure this is enforced."

At this meeting, Yoon Jae-ok, floor leader of the People Power Party, pointed out, "What is important is science and facts," adding, "Scientific facts confirmed by numerous experts show that the Fukushima contaminated water will circulate clockwise in the Pacific Ocean and reach our country's waters at the earliest in about five years. If the contaminated water threatens life and health, why would countries like the United States, Canada, and Mexico, which the contaminated water would reach before us, not oppose the discharge?"
Floor leader Yoon introduced, "What our government must do to protect the people is not political strife but thorough surveillance and monitoring to establish practical safety measures for the public," and explained, "Since June 15, the government has been providing daily briefings on the safety management of our waters and seafood, and has established multiple layers of verification procedures to ensure no impact on the safety and health of the people." He added, "We have negotiated for our experts to participate in the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) field office, established an information-sharing system including receiving real-time monitoring data, and posted information in Korean on related websites so that the public can quickly access it," emphasizing, "If there are any changes, even minor ones, to the matters promised by Japan, we will demand an immediate halt to the discharge and ensure this is enforced." He further stressed, "We will also strengthen safety monitoring of our waters and seafood, and the ban on imports of seafood from areas near Fukushima will continue as planned."
He criticized, "Despite these safety measures, the Democratic Party's behavior of inciting public anxiety and using this issue solely as a tool for political strife is a regressive political act no different from the false agitation during the mad cow disease incident in the past, and is irresponsible."
Seong Il-jong, a member of the People Power Party and chair of the Protect Our Sea Task Force, also stated, "This issue should be approached not with emotion but within the realm of science," and urged, "Please trust and watch the People Power Party and the Yoon Seok-yeol administration."
