On the 22nd, Governor Kim posted on his Instagram, asking, "For whom does the government of the Republic of Korea exist?" and then stated, "Japan will discharge contaminated water from Fukushima into the ocean on the 24th."
He continued, "Our government has consistently been busy representing Japan," pointing out, "It produced promotional videos for the safety of Japan's contaminated water using taxpayers' money and remained passive even during summit meetings."
He added, "As the governor responsible for protecting the lives and safety of 14 million Gyeonggi residents, I demand," and urged, "The government of the Republic of Korea must immediately demand the Japanese government to withdraw the discharge of contaminated water."
Meanwhile, the Japanese government announced on the same day that it has decided to begin discharging contaminated water from the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant into the ocean as early as the 24th.
This marks the start of the discharge two years and four months after then-Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga officially decided on ocean discharge as the disposal method for contaminated water in April 2021. It has been about 12 years since the Fukushima nuclear accident caused by the Great East Japan Earthquake on March 11, 2011.
