Lotte Mart "Fresh West Coast Flower Crabs Packed with Meat Sold at 900 Won Range"
Lotte Mart announced on the 22nd that it will sell fresh ‘Haetkkotge’ (newly caught blue crabs) at all its stores.
Blue crabs are in season during spring and autumn. In spring, the ‘female blue crabs’ filled with roe are abundant, while in autumn, after the closed season, the ‘male blue crabs’ with full meat are more common. The product being introduced this time is male blue crabs caught immediately after the closed season, from June 21 to August 20. The period right after the closed season is when consumers can enjoy fresh Haetkkotge at reasonable prices. This year, due to effective juvenile fish release and fishery resource management, the catch volume is expected to increase compared to last year.
Accordingly, Lotte Mart will hold a discount event from the 24th to the 30th, selling ‘West Coast Haetkkotge (100g/refrigerated/domestic)’ for 992 won. The event includes a 20% discount for L.POINT members as part of the ‘2023 Fisheries Promotion Campaign with the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries’ and an additional 20% discount when using event cards (Lotte/Shinhan/KB Kookmin/Woori cards).
To secure a stable supply, Lotte Mart has signed advance contracts with 30 fishing vessels based in Sinjindo Port in Chungnam and Gyeokpo Port in Jeonbuk, the largest blue crab production areas. To respond promptly to any changes in supply, fisheries MDs (Merchandisers) have been stationed at major ports. Additionally, contracts have been made with 12 packing facilities that sort and package the crabs caught at the fishing ports, ensuring a steady supply of fresh blue crabs throughout the season.
The blue crabs introduced this time are characterized by being caught using the yujamang (drift net) method. Yujamang involves floating nets in areas with strong currents to catch crabs that get trapped in the nets. Blue crabs caught by yujamang mostly swim in the currents before being caught, resulting in larger and meatier crabs compared to those caught by traps placed on the seabed.
