Mokpo City in Jeollanam-do announced that hairtail fishing at Peace Square will be operated for 112 days from the 21st of this month until December 10.
The hairtail fishing event is conducted to increase fishermen's income, revitalize the local economy, and provide tourists with enjoyable activities.
The city received temporary permission from the Mokpo Regional Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Office for 37 fishing boats.

View original imageThe sea in front of Peace Square is a space where the sea and urban areas coexist, allowing visitors to enjoy hairtail fishing on board with only about a 20-minute travel time, without the burden of long-distance trips.
In particular, visitors can enjoy the beautiful night view of Mokpo, making it a special experience. It is also easy for beginners, attracting many family fishing groups.
Over the past three years, the number of visitors enjoying hairtail fishing at Peace Square was 5,222 in 2020, 3,929 in 2021, and 10,537 in 2022. The number of visitors increased significantly last year after COVID-19, and many visitors are expected this year as well.

The fishing boats depart from Bukhang and Namhang ports, enjoying the night view of Mokpo while heading to Peace Square.
Mayor Park Hong-ryul stated, “This year, nationwide events such as the 104th National Sports Festival and the 43rd National Para Games are being held, raising national interest in Mokpo City. We expect that hairtail fishing will greatly contribute not only to increasing tourists but also to revitalizing the local economy.” He added, “We will strive to create an environment where tourists visiting Mokpo can enjoy convenient and safe fishing.”

Meanwhile, the city announced that from the 11th to the 16th, a joint safety inspection was conducted in advance for the 37 participating vessels by the Mokpo Regional Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Office, Mokpo Coast Guard, Korea Maritime Transportation Safety Authority Mokpo Branch, and the National Federation of Fisheries Cooperatives Mokpo Vessel Safety Operation Bureau.
