The first trial court explained, "Nafla meticulously planned for a long time to receive a Grade 5 evaluation and delayed his service, sending threatening messages to the Seocho-gu officer in charge, showing a bad nature of the crime," and added, "He committed the crime while being tried for a drug case." However, the court also stated, "Considering that he reflected during more than five months of detention, received an actual Grade 4 evaluation due to psychiatric depression, and showed fear of military service after growing up in the United States."
