Jongno District (Mayor Jung Moon-heon) is drawing attention for continuing to uphold high standards of integrity during the 8th term of the local government.
This appears to be a declaration of intent to restore the tradition established during the 5th term when Jongno District ranked first in integrity among all basic local governments nationwide.
It is well known as a district where the mayor set a shining example of integrity by not accepting even a single pen from employees returning from trips during the 5th term.
Because of this, Jongno District is recognized for maintaining a consistently honest public service atmosphere. In particular, Mayor Jung Moon-heon, a native of Jongno and a seasoned politician who served two terms as a National Assembly member, has expressed his determination to uphold his honor as a blameless mayor in his hometown.
Moreover, the Jongno District Office is located on the site of the house where Jeong Do-jeon, a founding statesman who helped King Taejo establish the Joseon Dynasty, once lived. Among the 25 districts of Seoul, Jongno is undoubtedly the ‘number one district office’ with rich history and tradition. To uphold the pride befitting Jongno, the responsibility of the ‘Integrity No.1 District’ mayor is heavier than anywhere else.
Following last year, Jongno District produced an integrity video message featuring Mayor Jung Moon-heon, which was revealed to staff on the 14th.
Marking the 1st anniversary of the 8th term, the two-minute video conveys Mayor Jung’s strong commitment to making Jongno an integrity district. It includes the mayor’s pledge to practice integrity, eradicate abusive behavior, promote proactive and courteous administration, and calls for exemplary leadership from senior officials?essential elements for an honest public service life.
This year, to set an example as an integrity district, the office formed an ‘Anti-Corruption and Integrity Promotion Team’ composed of senior officials at grade 4 and above on June 4, holding regular meetings to ensure the effectiveness and momentum of related policies. In July, they held ‘Visiting T-time (Talking & Training) Integrity Education,’ providing tailored training by touring 10 departments handling corruption-prone tasks.
Additionally, the district is focusing on spreading a culture of integrity through various methods such as integrity education for all employees and senior officials, integrity evaluations for senior officials, sending integrity letters, and operating an integrity ARS system. Future plans include mayor and team leader integrity meetings, anti-corruption and integrity training for team leaders, an integrity gala concert with residents, and revitalizing the integrity meal ticket system.
Mayor Jung Moon-heon stated, “Since the launch of the 8th term last year, not a single case of corruption has occurred in our district thanks to employees who prioritized integrity and worked diligently and sincerely. I hope this video production will help embed an honest public service culture more deeply into daily life. We will devote ourselves to making Jongno a trusted integrity district for our residents.”
For public officials, ‘integrity’ and ‘courtesy’ are fateful tasks. A moment’s lapse can easily topple a carefully built tower. For this reason, district offices often hold various events emphasizing ‘integrity’ led by their mayors.
