This event is part of the performance program of ‘Exploring Seoul Hyochang Park,’ which has been operating since April after being selected in the Cultural Heritage Administration’s Saengsaeng Cultural Heritage (Local Cultural Heritage Utilization Project) competition.
The Seoul Hyochang Park Cultural Concert is a play themed on the life of independence activists. It portrays the trial process in which Ahn Jung-geun is prosecuted for assassinating Ito Hirobumi. The program also includes a segment where the audience can step onto the stage and stand in the courtroom. Through experiencing the role of independence fighters, the aim is to help participants reflect on the meaning of national independence themselves.
Hyochang Park is famous as a sacred site of the independence movement. The remains of seven patriotic martyrs, including Baekbeom Kim Gu and the Three Martyrs (Lee Bong-chang, Yun Bong-gil, Baek Jeong-gi), are interred there. A cenotaph for Ahn Jung-geun is also erected in the park.
The historical significance and value embodied in Hyochang Park are incorporated into four detailed programs?performance, education, experience, and tourism?including the ‘Seoul Hyochang Park Cultural Concert.’
The educational program features the ‘Hyochang Humanities Lecture Series.’ It is organized as humanities lectures divided by themes related to figures, history, and social stories connected to Hyochang Park. The lectures will be held three times on September 26, November 11, and 25.
Applications for program participation can be made by phone to the operating agency (Korea Heritage Center), via Google Form, or by scanning the QR code on the poster. Participation is free of charge.
The ‘21st Century Korean Patriotic Corps’ program concluded in May. Participants wore modern-era clothing and decoded secret messages to deliver independence funds. A total of 127 people participated over six sessions.
A family participant shared, “I feel like I learned a lot about Hyochang Park and independence history, and my patriotism has grown.”
