Yoon: "UN Command is a Strong Force Defending Korea... Ensuring Peace Through Solidarity"
Meeting with Key UN Command Officials
North Korea Views UN Command as Obstacle to Communist Unification
Criticism of Anti-State Forces Demanding UN Command Dissolution
President Yoon Suk-yeol on the 10th evaluated the United Nations Command (UNC) as a powerful force defending the Republic of Korea, emphasizing, "The Republic of Korea will guarantee true peace and firmly protect the values of liberal democracy through a strong alliance with the United States as the core axis and solid solidarity with UNC member countries." President Yoon also repeatedly criticized the 'anti-state forces' for advocating the dissolution of the UNC.
On the same day, President Yoon held a meeting at the Yongsan Presidential Office with key UNC officials, including Commander Paul LaCamera and Deputy Commander Andrew Harrison. The UNC was established based on United Nations Security Council Resolution 84, adopted in July 1950, and has been tasked with maintaining the armistice regime.
President Yoon stated, "The UNC has protected the free Republic of Korea amid a precarious crisis and continues to play a central role in maintaining peace on the Korean Peninsula even after 70 years," adding, "In the event of a war on the Korean Peninsula, it integrates allied forces and provides them to the ROK-US Combined Forces Command, serving as a powerful force defending the Republic of Korea."
He continued, "North Korea still regards the UNC as the greatest obstacle to communist unification of the Korean Peninsula. In case of emergencies on the peninsula, the UNC plays a role in immediately and automatically providing member countries' forces without a separate Security Council resolution," emphasizing, "This is why North Korea and the anti-state forces that follow them continuously call for the dissolution of the UNC in connection with a declaration of the end of the war."
President Yoon further stressed, "However, the wise people of our Republic of Korea will never be deceived by their claims of 'fake peace.'"
Earlier, on June 28, at an event hosted by the Korea Freedom Federation, President Yoon targeted the previous administration and opposition parties by stating, "Anti-state forces pleaded for the lifting of UN Security Council sanctions against the North Korean communist group that is advancing its nuclear armament and sang the praises of a declaration of the end of the war that would dissolve the UNC."
On this day as well, President Yoon declared, "Peace must be realized through overwhelming and powerful force to make North Korea abandon its nuclear weapons voluntarily," and added, "Only strong power, not 'fake peace' relying on the goodwill of the other side, can guarantee true peace."
He emphasized again, "The Republic of Korea will guarantee true peace and firmly protect the values of liberal democracy through a strong alliance with the United States as the core axis and solid solidarity with UNC member countries."
