The Cool Korea Challenge is a summer energy-saving relay campaign jointly conducted by the Korea Energy Agency and Fashion Group Hyungji. It aims to reduce cooling energy consumption by lowering the perceived temperature through simple clothing. The campaign proceeds by having leaders from various fields first take photos in casual attire, promote it on social media, and then nominate the next participant.
Lotte Mart announced on the 10th that CEO Kang, nominated by Lee Je-hoon, CEO of Homeplus, participated in the campaign on the 4th at Lotte Mart headquarters in Songpa-gu, Seoul, wearing light clothing together with employees. He nominated Lee Won-jik, CEO of Lotte Biologics, as the next participant.
Since 2016, Lotte Mart has implemented full autonomy in work attire to foster a flexible organizational culture and a comfortable working environment. Since Kang’s appointment in 2021, wearing shorts during summer has also been encouraged.
In addition, Lotte Mart is conducting various energy-saving activities. A representative example is the 'Refrigerator Door Installation Project,' which reduces power consumption by installing doors on open refrigeration equipment. Starting with the Cheongnyangni branch in September 2021, Lotte Mart completed door installations on refrigeration equipment at 68 stores as of the 4th. An additional 11 stores are scheduled for installation by the end of the year. This has improved food freshness and reduced power usage by about 30% compared to before. It is expected to save 12 million kWh of electricity annually and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 5,500 tons.
Lotte Mart has also built solar power generation facilities using rooftops and idle parking lots at 50 stores nationwide, producing 9.2 GW annually, enough electricity for about 25,000 households of four people for one year.
