A lottery winner in the United States has won a prize worth over 2 trillion won. It is the third largest jackpot in history.
According to AFP and other sources on the 9th (local time), the US lottery 'Mega Millions' announced that a first-place winner who will receive $1.58 billion (approximately 2.0722 trillion won) emerged in the drawing held the previous day. The identity of the winner has not yet been confirmed.
This first-place prize is the largest amount in Mega Millions history. The previous largest prize was $1.537 billion (approximately 2.0165 trillion won), which was won five years ago in October 2018. This prize is the third largest in the history of US lotteries. The largest lottery jackpot in US history was $2.04 billion (approximately 2.6683 trillion won) from the Powerball lottery in November last year.

The first-place prize can be received either as an annuity paid over 30 years in fixed annual amounts or as a lump sum payment of half the total amount. The lump sum payment for this prize amounts to $783 million (approximately 1.0277 trillion won). All winnings are subject to income tax, and AFP reported that most winners choose to receive the lump sum payment.
