Prosecutors Seek Life Sentence for Man in His 30s in 'Ex-Lover Revenge Murder' Case... Defendant Requests Death Penalty
The prosecution has requested a life sentence for a man in his 30s who committed retaliatory murder against his ex-girlfriend who reported him for dating violence. In his final statement, the man asked the court to sentence him to death.
On the 7th, during the sentencing hearing held by the Criminal Division 11 of the Seoul Southern District Court (Presiding Judge Jeong Doseong), the prosecution requested a life sentence for Kim Mo (33), who is charged with retaliatory murder under the Act on the Aggravated Punishment of Specific Crimes. The prosecution also asked the court to issue orders for disclosure of personal information, completion of a sexual violence treatment program, prohibition from employment at child and youth institutions, attachment of an electronic location tracking device, and probation.
Kim is accused of killing A, his ex-girlfriend whom he had dated for about a year, with a pre-prepared weapon at 7:17 a.m. on May 26, immediately after being reported for dating violence and submitting a statement at a police substation. After the attack, Kim put the fallen A into a car and fled, but was arrested eight hours later in Paju, Gyeonggi Province.
The prosecution stated, "Kim calmly told witnesses that A was pregnant and injured and needed to go to the hospital, while A suffered extreme pain and died." They added, "This case not only infringes on the legal rights of the victim of retaliatory crime but also threatens to undermine the criminal justice system, so a strong response is necessary."
They further noted, "The crime of using a weapon in a public commercial area is serious, and based on the Supreme Prosecutors' Office psychological analysis and probation feedback, Kim has been confirmed to have a high risk of reoffending."
In his final defense, Kim said he should be sentenced to death. He stated, "I speak the truth, not lies," and asked, "Is it right for me to live off the country's taxes?" He continued, "I felt heavy-hearted and sad seeing news about retaliatory murders," and added, "Please carry out my execution so that such incidents never happen again."
