An 'Eco-Friendly Library' 2.5 Times Larger Than Seoul Library to Open in Dongdaemun
International Design Competition from the 28th
A municipal library with a size 2.5 times that of the Seoul Library will be established in Jeonnong-dong, Dongdaemun-gu. It will be the largest library operated by the city and will be built as the first 'eco-friendly wooden structure building' in Seoul.
The city announced on the 7th that it is promoting the construction of the (tentatively named) Seoul Municipal Library (Dongdaemun), aiming to open in 2029. It will be developed as a 'complex cultural and community space' where not only book reading but also cultural and artistic events and programs are actively held throughout the year.
To this end, Seoul will hold the 'Seoul Municipal Library (Dongdaemun) International Design Competition' from the 28th until December 15. The Seoul Municipal Library (Dongdaemun), which will be the first 'wooden structure construction pilot project' in Seoul, will be built using a 'hybrid method' combining wooden construction and eco-friendly building techniques. It is a large-scale project with a site area of 16,899㎡, a total floor area of 25,000㎡, an outdoor garden of 10,000㎡, and a planned design cost of 8.7 billion KRW, with a total investment of about 300 billion KRW.
Seoul plans to operate the Seoul Municipal Library (Dongdaemun) not as a 'quiet library' for reading books only, but as an integrated center for books and knowledge information reflecting the latest ICT technology, as well as a 'complex cultural and community space' bustling with diverse cultural and artistic programs such as exhibitions, performances, and experiences.

Choi Kyung-joo, head of Seoul’s Cultural Headquarters, said, "Recently, worldwide, 'libraries' are being developed as 'complex cultural spaces' that bring together various cultures through books to rejuvenate citizens' lives and cities." He added, "Through this Seoul Municipal Library (Dongdaemun) construction project, we expect the creation of a cultural facility that enhances urban competitiveness and an eco-friendly architectural landmark representing Seoul."
